June Meeting - new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge Pr ....

Description :

New Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge Project

Please join us for a presentation by David Silberberger, Caltrans, on the newly completed the State Route 1 Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge.  The bridge is vital link between Big Sur and the other communities in Monterey County. Through innovative design and collaboration, Caltrans was able to build a new bridge in seven months when a project of this magnitude would normally take 7-8 years.  The original bridge was damaged in a landslide in February 2017. Due to the severe impact to the community of losing this bridge Caltrans was able to accelerate the project. Caltrans ordered the steel in advance, accelerated the design and used an innovative way to pull the assembled steel girder bridge into place.  The new $24 million single-span steel bridge replaces the 49-year-old concrete bridge which was demolished in March, 2017.

This bridge was recognized as an Accelerated Bridge Construction project, new to California and the Big Sur Community. Dozens of bridge workers worked long hours, mostly 6-7 days a week to complete the bridge. The signature feature of the new structure is 15 steel girders fabricated in Vallejo, weighing 62 tons each that span the rugged, 310-foot canyon. Its design includes no support columns, eliminating structural vulnerability from future slide activity. The new bridge has 12-foot lanes and 5-foot outside shoulders making it accessible for all travelers.
